The Counseling for Health and Growth Wellness Model

Health and wellness are the goals of both the client and the therapist at Counseling for Health and Growth. Together, we will discover the positive feelings, ideas and behaviors that define your better self. Once these have been found, we will find ways to support and accentuate these positive practices.

Relationship and Family

The relationship work is based on the Gottman Approach. John Gottman, an internationally renown researcher from the University of Washington has done a statistical analysis of what makes marriages last and what undermines them. Geoff applies these principals to relationships in general. (Geoff is not a fully certified Gottman Marriage Counselor.)

Chemical Misuse

Geoff is a Certified Chemical Dependency Counselor. He focuses on two elements in chemical misuse:

  • Motivation to change (As seen in Motivational Interviewing)
  • Internal - Moods, thoughts and physiology, external relationships, living situations and stresses that affect a persons ability to avoid chemical misuse.

Mood Goals

Mood is a state of mind connected to emotion. Counseling for Health and Growth promotes the idea that the mind tends to gravitate into mood patterns that develop over time and are reinforced by environment. Geoff aims to help his clients create a positive awareness of the mood he or she wants. This is the "mood goal". Through noticing how and when the client achieves that mood, he or she will spend increasing amounts of time in that mood experience. This technique utilizes more Rogerian less directive exploration exploration and processing; along with more directive cognitive behavioral approaches.
